BEFORE THE END

By John Thomas Tuft

There is a great pause, a gathering of strength

When the armies prepare for the battle

Knowing full well when they charge the field

Before the end, it is their blood as chattel.

Owned by king and country until the bitter finale

Until time carries them around the bend

When they strike the colors at the River Styx

Salute the knight, not the sword, before the end.
